Having One Desire

"Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you." ~ Psalm 73:25

A friend writes to ask me for prayer. Paragraph after paragraph, bullet by bullet, she describes all the things God needs to fix in her life. The requests are finely choreographed, with scriptures to back her requests. And I see something of myself in her feverish attempts to change a heartbreaking situation.

We desire so much.

On any given day, our prayers are filled with what we perceive to be our greatest needs. As we remind God of these needs, trying to pray with some kind of formalaic certainty, the Lord sees deep below the surface issues. Our greatest need is not usually what we think it is - finances, health, or relationships. I'm learning that my greatest need in every situation is to experience Him as my all in all - to know Him as my Source and my Supply.

When Jesus becomes our focus and our one desire, these other things fall into place as He has preeminence in our lives. He lives to meet our need, and He is working all things together for good for those of us who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

"The L
ord is my shepherd; I have all that I need." ~ Psalm 23:1 (NLT)

How wonderfully expressed. It's true, once we stop and focus on Him, our "needs" become an incedibly shrinking list. He can't hand us our gifts if we aren't looking at Him.

For me, I always begin my prayers with...Lord, I know thy will be done...but here is what I think....just so you know..but I understand and have it on my heart that all will proceed as you have planned.

We talked about desperation tonight at church.
The only things that matters is that we are desperate for Him. The rest will fall into line as He guides it to. When He walks through our lives it will be like the waves behind a boat--the ripples will touch every area. Longing for the touch. Longing to see His face.
